You take price exposure without owning the share, which means no voting rights, cash adjustments in place of dividends, and an overnight financing charge. A few brokers offer genuine share dealing alongside, which is a materially different product. |
| How are dividends handled on a share CFD? | Long positions are credited a cash adjustment and short positions are debited, around the ex-dividend date. The adjustment is not always the full dividend, and the credit may be net of withholding tax. |
| What does holding a share CFD cost overnight? | A financing charge based on a benchmark rate plus the broker's markup, applied daily. Over months that charge can exceed any commission saving, which is what makes CFDs poorly suited to long-term holding. |
