Support
A price area where buying interest has previously been strong enough to halt or reverse a decline.
What Support means
Support is a price area where buying interest has previously proved strong enough to halt or reverse a decline. It is best drawn as a zone rather than an exact line, because the orders that create it cluster across a range of prices rather than sitting at one quote. Support commonly forms at prior swing lows, at round numbers, along the lower edge of a trading range, and at levels generated by tools such as pivot points, moving averages or Fibonacci retracements. The more often a zone has been respected, the more traders watch it.
Traders use support in two opposite ways: buying near it in the expectation that it holds, with a stop a defined distance below, or waiting for a decisive close beneath it and trading the breakdown. A widely observed feature is polarity, where broken support tends to act as resistance afterwards. The limitation is that support is an interpretation rather than a mechanism. The levels are visible to everyone, and the clusters of stop orders sitting just beneath them are a routine target for short, sharp probes before price resumes.
Worked example
GBP/USD stalls within a few pips of 1.2700 on three separate occasions in a fortnight, so a trader treats 1.2690 to 1.2710 as support and, with the 14-period ATR at 24 pips, places a protective stop at 1.2655, about 1.5 ATR below the zone.

Trade with a regulated broker
Understanding the terminology is the cheap part. The expensive part is choosing a counterparty whose execution, financing and withdrawal behaviour match what the marketing implies. Every broker below has been reviewed with a funded live account, and each review states which legal entity and which regulator applies to the account you would actually open.
Check the licence on the regulator's own register before you deposit — our regulators directory explains what each authority enforces, from leverage caps to compensation limits.
