Trading Session
One of the regional periods - Sydney, Tokyo, London or New York - into which the continuous 24-hour forex day is divided.
What Trading Session means
Forex trades continuously from Sunday evening to Friday evening New York time, but activity is not evenly spread. The day is conventionally split into the Sydney, Tokyo, London and New York sessions, reflecting when each region's banks and institutions are at their desks. London is the largest centre by turnover, and the overlap between London and New York, roughly 08:00 to 12:00 New York time, is the busiest and most liquid window of the day.
Session structure has practical consequences. Spreads are tightest and depth greatest during the London and New York overlap, while the late New York and early Sydney hours bring wider spreads and erratic pricing. Currencies also tend to be most active during their home session, so yen crosses move in Tokyo hours and sterling pairs in London hours. Session boundaries shift by an hour when daylight saving changes take effect at different dates in different regions.
Worked example
A scalper trading EUR/USD will typically restrict activity to the 08:00 to 12:00 New York window, when spreads can be a fraction of a pip rather than one to two pips overnight.

Trade with a regulated broker
Understanding the terminology is the cheap part. The expensive part is choosing a counterparty whose execution, financing and withdrawal behaviour match what the marketing implies. Every broker below has been reviewed with a funded live account, and each review states which legal entity and which regulator applies to the account you would actually open.
Check the licence on the regulator's own register before you deposit — our regulators directory explains what each authority enforces, from leverage caps to compensation limits.
